7th Annual Nonprofit Conference
A Huge Success!
The Staten Island Not-For-Profit Association held its 7th annual Nonprofit Conference on Tuesday, May 9th at the Hilton Garden Inn. The conference is the only full-day event in the borough specifically focused on improving the capacity of the nonprofit sector.

The morning keynote speaker was Sharon Stapel, Executive Director, Nonprofit Coordinating Committee of New York City (NPCC). Stapel led attendees through a self-assessment of their organization based on eight key areas of nonprofit excellence which includes financial management, communications and human resources.

Afternoon keynote speakers were Fran Barrett, NYS Interagency Coordinator for Not-For-Profit Services; and Karin Kunsler-Goldman, Deputy Bureau Chief, Charities Bureau. Both discussed changes the state is making to assist nonprofits in applying for grants, receiving funds faster and supporting their sustainability.

In between speakers, a series of one hour workshops was held in the morning and afternoon. Morning workshops focus on board development, recruiting and engaging volunteers; starting your own nonprofit; and how to better retain paid staff. Afternoon workshops were led by local nonprofits and focused on emergency preparedness, grant writing, improving customer services and learning chair meditation techniques to de-stress.

Throughout the day local vendors were also on hand to provide additional information and services. Vendors included Mutual of America; Reliable Office Solutions; All State Insurance; Bentson Insurance Company; Richmond County Savings Bank; Staten Island Chamber of Commerce; College of Staten Island, DeSantis, Keifer, Shall and Sarcone, LLP; the JCC of Staten Island; Bernstein Group & Associates; and the office of State Senator Diane Savino.
